It’s the Easter weekend, April 2020, but something is different… the weather?
Yesterday (10th April) was 24 degrees in the South East of England and today reached an incredible 25 degrees, unusually warm for April and for sure triggering a growth spurt in the garden. However, something far bigger hangs over us this Easter…and it’s not the poison ivy!
Well there is an alikeness but it’s far more serious and on a scale that’s alarming.

In the context of gardening…
There could be a subtle likeness to Toxicodendron radicans, or more commonly known as ‘poison ivy’, which also slowly and steadily infiltrates.
A well known allergenic Asian (and Eastern North American) flowering plant in the genus Toxicodendron.
Check out the Wiki description: The species is known for causing dermal issues for most people who touch it, variable in its appearance and habit.
But despite its common name, it is not a true ivy (Hedera: ivy), surprisingly it’s a member of the cashew and pistachio family (Anacardiaceae).
The ivy does have uses as it’s eaten by many animals, and the seeds are consumed by birds, but still poison ivy is most often thought of as an unwelcome weed. Incidentally, it is a different species from western poison ivy (Toxicodendron rydbergii) which has similar effects.
